How to convert military time to standard time
- 0000 to 1159: it’s morning. Keep the hour (drop a leading zero) and add AM. 0730 = 7:30 AM. The only special case is 00xx, which is 12:xx AM (0015 = 12:15 AM).
- 1200 to 1259: it’s just after noon. 1245 = 12:45 PM.
- 1300 to 2359: subtract 12 from the hour and add PM. 1845 → 18 − 12 = 6 → 6:45 PM.
How to convert standard time to military time
- AM times: write the hour with a leading zero. 6:05 AM = 0605. Midnight to 12:59 AM starts with 00 (12:30 AM = 0030).
- PM times: add 12 to the hour. 3:20 PM = 1520. Noon hour stays 12 (12:10 PM = 1210).
How to say military time
Military time is spoken as two pairs of digits followed by “hours”. 1400 is “fourteen hundred hours”; 0930 is “zero nine thirty”; 2215 is “twenty-two fifteen”. There is no colon and no AM or PM.
Is it 0000 or 2400?
Both are used for midnight. 0000 marks the start of a day and 2400 marks the end of a day. Many time clocks and schedules avoid 2400 and use 2359 or 0000 instead.
Why use 24-hour time?
It removes AM/PM mix-ups, which is why it is standard in the military, hospitals, aviation, and many workplaces with night shifts. It also makes calculating shift length easier — see the hours calculator.
