What does time and a half mean?
“Time and a half” means you are paid your normal hourly rate plus half of it again — 1.5 times your regular rate. It is the standard U.S. overtime rate for hours worked beyond 40 in a workweek by non-exempt employees.
Formula: time-and-a-half rate = hourly rate × 1.5

How to calculate it in your head
Halve your rate and add it back. For $18: half is $9, so time and a half is $18 + $9 = $27. For $22.50: half is $11.25, so the answer is $33.75.
Time and a half vs. double time
Double time is 2× your rate. The federal overtime rate is time and one half, so double time is not a federal requirement, but California requires it for hours over 12 in a workday (and over 8 on the seventh day of work in a workweek), and many union contracts and employers pay it for holidays or Sundays.
Holiday pay is not automatically time and a half
Federal law does not require premium pay for working on holidays or weekends. Time and a half on a holiday is an employer policy or contract term, unless the holiday hours also push you over 40 for the week.
