The quick answers. A full-time year is 2,080 hours (40 hours a week for 52 weeks), so an hourly wage times 2,080 is the yearly pay before tax. $15 an hour is $31,200 a year, $20 is $41,600, $25 is $52,000 and $30 is $62,400. Going the other way, a salary divided by 2,080 is the hourly rate: $50,000 is about $24.04 an hour and $100,000 about $48.08.

How the conversion works

Yearly pay = hourly wage × hours per week × weeks per year. For a standard full-time job that is hourly wage × 40 × 52, or hourly wage × 2,080. To go back, hourly wage = yearly pay ÷ (hours per week × weeks per year), or yearly pay ÷ 2,080. The other columns are the yearly figure divided up: monthly is a twelfth, every two weeks is a twenty-sixth, and weekly is the wage times the hours worked in a week.

Two shortcuts for a rough answer: double the hourly wage and add "thousand" ($25 an hour is about $50,000; the exact figure is $52,000), or divide a salary by 2,000 (the exact divisor is 2,080). If your hours or weeks differ, use the hourly to salary calculator, which also handles overtime and unpaid weeks.

When your hours or weeks are different

The charts assume 40 hours for 52 weeks. Here is the yearly pay for five common wages at four weekly schedules, still before tax. Two unpaid weeks mean 50 paid weeks: $40,000 at $20 an hour instead of $41,600.

Hours past 40 in a week can earn overtime if you are a non-exempt employee: see our overtime calculator and time card calculator. A salary that covers long weeks pays less per hour worked: $28.85 an hour at 40 hours a week is $23.08 at 50 hours a week.

Gross pay is not take-home pay

Everything on this page is gross: before federal and state income tax, Social Security and Medicare, and deductions such as health insurance or a 401(k) contribution. What lands in your account is lower, and by how much depends on your state, filing status and deductions. Use the paycheck calculator for your own numbers, or see take-home pay by state to compare places. If a raise is on the table, the pay raise calculator shows what it adds each paycheck.

What is the minimum?

The federal minimum wage under the Fair Labor Standards Act is $7.25 an hour, unchanged since July 24, 2009 (U.S. Department of Labor: Federal minimum wage history). That is $15,080 a year full time. State and local minimums can be higher, so check your own state labor department.

Sources and limits

The formulas are plain arithmetic, and every figure is computed by the same code that runs our calculators, which our tests check against hand-worked examples. The federal minimum wage figure comes from U.S. Department of Labor: Federal minimum wage history, which we read on September 26, 2026. Real paychecks differ: employers may pay for fewer or more than 52 weeks, round differently, or pay overtime, bonuses or differentials. This is general information, not payroll or financial advice.
