What is different in Louisiana:
- Flat 3% income tax on wages — flattened from brackets in 2025.
- No local wage tax: parishes cannot add their own income tax.
- The 3% applies to wages after pre-tax deductions like a 401(k).
- Federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare work exactly as in every other state.
What a Louisiana paycheck looks like at six salaries
Single filer, paid every two weeks, no 401(k) or other deductions, 2026 figures. Every number below comes from the same tested formulas the calculator above uses.
| Salary | Federal income tax | Social Security + Medicare | Louisiana tax | Take-home / year | Take-home / paycheck |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| $47,000 | $3,460 | $3,596 | $1,410 | $38,535 | $1,482.10 |
| $67,000 | $5,910 | $5,126 | $2,010 | $53,955 | $2,075.17 |
| $87,000 | $10,310 | $6,656 | $2,610 | $67,425 | $2,593.25 |
| $111,000 | $15,590 | $8,492 | $3,330 | $83,589 | $3,214.94 |
| $141,000 | $22,574 | $10,787 | $4,230 | $103,410 | $3,977.29 |
| $182,000 | $32,414 | $13,923 | $5,460 | $130,203 | $5,007.81 |
Worked example: $86,000, married, paid monthly
Married filing jointly, paid once a month, 4% of salary to a traditional 401(k) — $286.67 a month, $3,440 a year — in Louisiana.
- Taxable income: $86,000 − $3,440 401(k) − $32,200 standard deduction (married filing jointly) = $50,360.00.
- Federal income tax on that amount: $5,547.20 a year.
- Social Security: $5,332.00; Medicare: $1,247.00. The 401(k) does not reduce these.
- Louisiana state income tax: $2,476.80.
- Take-home: $86,000 − $3,440 − $5,547.20 − $5,332.00 − $1,247.00 − $2,476.80 = $67,957.00 a year, or $5,663.08 per monthly paycheck.
Worked example: $24 an hour in Louisiana
A single worker earns $24.00 an hour for 40 hours a week: $24.00 × 40 × 52 = $49,920 a year before tax. After federal income tax ($3,810), Social Security ($3,095) and Medicare ($724) ($1,498 of Louisiana tax), take-home is $40,793 a year — about $1,568.97 per biweekly paycheck.
Louisiana vs Texas: $87,000
The same single worker earning $87,000, paid biweekly with no 401(k). Louisiana's 3% takes $2,610 a year; Texas takes $0.
| Louisiana | Texas (no income tax) | |
|---|---|---|
| Federal income tax | $10,310 | $10,310 |
| Social Security + Medicare | $6,656 | $6,656 |
| State income tax | $2,610 | $0 |
| Take-home per year | $67,425 | $70,035 |
The Texas worker keeps -$2,610 more per year than the Louisiana worker — about -$100.38 per paycheck. To compare every no-tax and flat-tax state side by side, see take-home pay by state. Also see our Texas paycheck calculator.
What Louisiana does not tax — and what it does
Louisiana flattened its old three-bracket system to a single 3% rate in 2025 — one of the lowest flat rates anywhere. Parishes can't add income tax, so the state line is just the 3%. Louisiana leans on a 4.45% state sales tax (plus some of the highest local sales taxes in the country) for the rest.
What this page leaves out
Child and dependent credits, itemized deductions, health premiums, 401(k) contributions beyond the examples above, bonuses and overtime are not in the simplified calculator — the full paycheck calculator covers all of them, with Louisiana at its 3.0% flat rate. For exact figures use your employer's payroll system or the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator.

Brackets and standard deductions come from IRS Revenue Procedure 2025-32. The Social Security wage base comes from the Social Security Administration, and Louisiana’s 3.0% flat rate is confirmed by the Tax Foundation's 2026 state rates. Last reviewed September 2026.
